With a new year comes new divorce filings

As we wrap up 2015 and head in to 2016, people around the world are coming up with new year's resolutions. For many in Florida and elsewhere, this means pledging to themselves to lose weight, save more money, or otherwise improve their lives. And for some, a major life change that they are planning for 2016 is a divorce.

Divorce is never an easy decision to make, particularly when a marriage has produced children and child custody battles could be on the horizon. However, many people take stock of their family life at the end of the year, and many decide that a major life change such as divorce can be of benefit to them.

It's for these reasons that January is a big month for divorce. In fact, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the divorce rate jumps by one-third when the calendar flips over to a new year.

Additionally, many people are together with their families at the end of the year -- at Thanksgiving and then again at Christmas. The realization that a divorce is in the cards may hit them then -- or they may have known for a long time -- but they decide to put it off until after the holidays to prevent any disruptions to family gatherings.

Whatever the reasons are that you are thinking about divorce, speaking with a family law attorney ahead of time can help you to prepare for the steps that are likely to follow.
