Number of people getting a divorce after age 50 is increasing

New information is coming to light regarding divorce statistics and people in Florida need to be aware of them to prepare for a potential parting of the ways between spouses. Research has shown that so-called "Baby Boomers" are more prone to getting a divorce than people in their age range were a quarter-century ago. The divorce rate for people age 50 and above has risen significantly since 1990. This is alternatively called a "gray divorce." It is occurring concurrently with the divorce rates for younger people reducing.

The statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau are clear as to this reality. 10 couples divorced for every 1,000 people age 50 and older in 2015. This was an increase from five in 1990. For people age 65 and older, the rate has tripled during that time with six people out of every 1,000 having divorced in 2015. The number of people under age 50 who are getting a divorce is twice as high as those 50 and older. There were 21 divorces for every 1,000 people age 40 to 49, but this is only a small increase from 1990 when there were 18 for every 1,000. For those 25 to 39, the rate reduced from 30 per 1,000 to 24 per 1,000.

It is believed that the reduction in younger divorces stems from various factors including younger people waiting to get married and those who do get married having a stronger educational background. College-educated couples do not get divorced as frequently as people without a college degree. Baby Boomers had higher divorce rates when they were younger and this is thought to contribute to the gray divorces because marriages that are second, third and more are considered to be less stable.

Since people who are older will generally have a more diverse portfolio than younger people, retirement plans, pensions and a high asset divorce is more of an issue. Having legal help from an attorney who is experienced with the problems and issues in dispute that are prevalent in these cases is key. When getting a divorce, this is the first call that a person about to have a gray divorce or any other kind of divorce with substantial assets should make.
