The expenses meant to be covered by child support

If a Floridian ever spends much time around a party who pays an ex-spouse child support, it is likely that at one point or another there has been mention of some disapproval in the way the money is spent. However, the receiving party may not always be in the wrong in what he or she chooses to purchase or pay for with child support funds.

It is a common misconception that child support monies are only meant to cover food and clothing. In reality, there are multiple other expenses that properly caring for a child entails. Just as it should be used for basic necessities, child support can and should be used for these additional expenses as well.

Typical child support and care expenses that should be taken care of include the basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing and personal care items; medical care and expenses, including insurance costs and uninsured prescriptions or surgeries; educational fees including field trip costs, supplies, uniforms, tuition, books and lunch money; child care of daycare fees; travel and transportation costs to transport a child safely from one place to another while in custody; and fees or expenses for extracurricular activities and things the child enjoys.

In summary, a child should not be forced to relinquish his or her quality of life because parents get divorced. Stability, safety and mental health and well-being are just as vital as food and clothing. Instead of being so quick to judge how an ex-spouse spends their hard earned money, truly consider whether or not the child would be as happy or healthy without it. Consulting with a child support attorney can help parents understand what child support payments are meant for, as well as assist in reaching an agreement that meets the needs of everyone involved.
